Pricing and specifications for the 2016 Toyota HiLux have finally been revealed.

The launch of the new, eighth-generation Toyota HiLux ute comes at a crucial time – there has been more activity in the light-commercial vehicle segment this year than in recent memory, with new models and updates all taking the shine off what has been the best-selling model in the segment for years.

Indeed, HiLux sales are in something of a slump, as existing stock of the previous-generation model sells out. In August, the Ford Ranger outsold the Toyota HiLux for the first time, while the Mitsubishi Triton also managed to top its Japanese rival.

Still, the HiLux remains the top-seller overall for 2015, and it is also Toyota’s second-most popular model in Australia.

Toyota Australia president, Dave Buttner, said at the launch of the new HiLux in Victoria this week that the company understands the importance of this model, which replaces the seventh-generation model that was on sale from 2005-2015.

“We’ve sold just on 2.1 million vehicles, and 18 per cent of that 2.1 million vehicles has been this product,” said Buttner.

“We never take success for granted. We cannot be arrogant and conceited in the marketplace.”

And with 31 variants – eight more than before – including a dozen 4×2 models and 19 4×4 versions, there is no doubting that the brand is eager to stay in the number one spot in the ute segment.

Pricing and equipment

With this update, buyers will be happy to learn that things aren’t dramatically different to the model it replaces in terms of pricing – but standard equipment levels on all models have risen considerably in light of new and revamped competition.

Standard fitment to all new-generation Toyota HiLux models is air conditioning – can you believe it was still a $2051 option on Workmate models? – as well as a touchscreen media system and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

The entry models get a 6.1-inch screen, while upper spec models have a 7.0-inch unit with extended connectivity, and the flagship model gets satellite navigation and digital radio. It’s the first ute in the class to come with a touchscreen as standard across the range.

Every HiLux now gets seven airbags as standard, including dual front, front-side and
